There is one specific and special passage in Scripture that stands out beyond all others when it comes to identifying the personal name of God. It's Exodus 3:13-15. The context must be considered carefully when looking at this passage. Moses is being sent to the children of Israel in Egypt, to deliver them from 430 years of bondage. As God is speaking to him Moses asks a crucial question, in Exodus 3.13.
God’s response, in the two verses that follow,
is the most profound statement on this subject in all of Scripture. However,
because of the translation errors that exist in most English Bible translations, His name does not appear in the text. It's been replaced with “The LORD”. That is not His name. That is not
what the Hebrew text has written in it. It is an improper translation. For the complete details on the gross

look at it for yourself and see what it really says. I realize most of you have
no Hebrew background. I have very little myself, and most of what I do have is
self-taught. I’m certainly not a Hebrew scholar, nor do I claim to be one.
However, if you use these available resources, which virtually anyone can obtain for themselves today, it's not difficult to discover the real Truth for yourself. What's given below should allow you to see clearly what the personal name of God is, and what it is not.
It is not "The LORD". It is YAHWEH. YHWH is the English transliteration of the Hebrew (read right to left) hDwøh◊y . These
four letters are known as The Tetragrammaton. The Hebrew letters are yod-heh-vav-heh. With the vowels added it reads YAHWEH. It is this word that exists in the Hebrew text. It means The Eternally Existing One. It has no language connection to "The LORD" whatsoever. How and why it's been replaced with something that cannot represent it in any manner is a complete travesty.

the English and the Hebrew. You can read them yourself, or figure them out,

the American Standard Version of Scripture This updated version inserts the
proper name of God, Yahweh, into the text where it occurs in the Old Testament.
While this is a good start, it doesn’t go far enough. It should be inserted
into the New Testament as well, especially where quotations occur from the Old
Testament. I’ve included it to show you there are a few translations that are
at least attempting to correct this horrendous error.
For the moment, please set aside verse 14 and
the references to “I AM”. I’ll come back to this verse and its meaning later.
Let me just say for now that “I AM” is not God’s name. This text makes that
abundantly clear. Indeed, it appears “I AM WHO I AM”, and “I AM has sent me to
you.” are greatly misunderstood statements. For that reason I’ll address them
separately.
Please note what I’ve highlighted in bold
colored text. This is what Moses was to
tell the children of Israel. This is what is supposed to be in your Bible. He
was not to tell them merely, “The I AM” has sent me to you. He was to tell them
the name of the God of their fathers is YAHWEH. That is specifically what Moses requested from God. He asked for His personal name, not His character. This is God’s Word, not mine.
I’m not asking you to believe me; I’m asking you to believe God Himself. He
wrote the Scriptures, not me.

Note: This is a common Hebraic construction. Where two identical words are placed together it multiplies the sense. In this case it means “all generations”, or generation to generation. It goes with the context of being His name for eternity, forever. But it also reaches into the past. It is not just a present sense or a future sense. It covers eternity past as well as eternity future, since eternity has no beginning and no end.
“I AM” in
Scripture
I stated I’d come back to this to deal separately with it. This is very important. God is, in some sense at least, very much the “I AM” of Scripture. But that is not His name. It is a description of His very essence. I’ll insert the definition of His personal name once more for convenient reference.

I AM is the translation of hÎyDh hayah. This word is the root from which YAHWEH comes. It means to
exist, to be, to or become, come to pass. It is not a name. It’s a quality or
character, or it’s a verb used to describe a quality or a character. The “I” in
the translation is inserted, by inference. It is not in the Hebrew text.
Having said that, it’s my
understanding that such an insertion is not uncommon. The implication of the
insertion makes this a statement that might be stated more like this:
“I
am that which exists.” Literally: "exists who (or which) exists".
YAHWEH is the eternally existing
one, the self-existent one. He is the source of all existence, of everything
that exists. He has made it all. It appears that what He is telling Moses is
that He is, indeed, existence itself, as a precursor to giving Moses His personal and eternal name, which is totally characterized by this essential element, eternal existence. He tells Moses that the Existing One (I
AM – there is no article) has sent him. And then, to make this even more
explicit, He states His personal and eternal name, YHWH, YAHWEH – The
eternally Existing One – Existence personified.
The statement, “I AM has
sent me to you.”, is really stating something more like this: “He who is existence itself has sent me to you." Keep in mind that the
name, YAHWEH, means The Eternally Existing One. This statement follows the
plain revelation that God’s personal and eternal name is YAHWEH.
Now, this is not the first time His name appears in Scripture.
Indeed, it has appeared often - in the Hebrew text, but not in most English Bibles - since it is first used in Genesis 2.4. There we find:
“This is the history of the generations of the heavens and of the
earth when they were created, in the day that YAHWEH (The LORD) Elohim (God) made earth and the heavens.”
(Typical “translation” in parentheses.)
You can discover this for yourself by obtaining an Interlinear Bible and studying it, or by using some Bible software program that has a Hebrew text in it. I understand that "YAHWEH Elohim" is most likely not in your Bible. But it is in the Hebrew text. I sincerely hope you’ll take this up with the publishers of your Bible translation. They need to correct this abomination. You may be astounded to know that this name occurs 6520 times in the Old Testament alone! Just try to find it even once in your “translation” of the text. This is not translation at all. This is alteration of the text. No matter what the reasoning for it, this is just plain wrong.
